TAI CHI

About Tai Chi

Instructor: Mrs. Paulette Zeran

Tai Chi for Health is an exercise program that provides a low-impact workout — without fear of injury or muscle strain. It can make a dramatic difference in strength, balance, breathing, and overall well-being.

Tai Chi for Health is based on Sun Style Tai Chi, a specialized Tai Chi program designed by Dr. Paul Lam of Australia for people suffering with Arthritis. One of the important features is safety, with special emphasis on fall prevention. Tai Chi is recognized by the Arthritis Foundation and the Center For Disease Control as a credible way to decrease falls in people 65 and older. Dr. Lam has trained instructors from all over the world to carry on his work.

Mrs. Paulette Zeran, VBKA’s Tai Chi for Health Instructor, has completed Dr. Lam’s Tai Chi training course. She has 30 years of Martial Arts teaching experience.

Researchers at Beijing University and Harvard Medical School have concluded that Tai Chi can impact people positively — even those with medical problems. According to An Introduction to Tai Chi (Harvard Health Publications), Tai Chi has greatly helped “healthy people whose mission was health preservation as well as people with conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis.” Increased balance and prevention of falls is considered one of the greatest benefits to seniors who participate in Tai Chi sessions at least two times per week. There is overwhelming evidence that modest but regular exercise can help people maintain mobility, agility, and balance into very old age.

Additionally, mental acuity and self-confidence improve, countering depression, anxiety, and stress. These benefits can help practitioners overcome obstacles that might otherwise hold them back.
